Canonical is hiring a Python Software Engineer to join the Certification team, which develops tools to verify hardware compatibility with Ubuntu across desktops, laptops, servers, and IoT devices. The Certification team creates tools for certifying hardware with Ubuntu Core, Ubuntu Desktop, and Server: . We design hardware probes and frameworks for software testing that ensure Ubuntu runs correctly on various devices.
This role offers an opportunity to impact Linux adoption across multiple device categories and industries. Canonical provides a dynamic, learning-rich environment, with the team primarily based in EMEA time zones, collaborating with colleagues in the Americas and APAC.
We work closely with silicon manufacturers, OEMs, ODMs, and internal teams to ensure a seamless, secure Ubuntu experience out of the box, expanding Ubuntu's presence on diverse devices.
Role descriptionWe seek a self-motivated Python developer to work on test automation tools and Linux-based embedded hardware. The role involves developing and maintaining Canonical's open-source certification tools, creating hardware solutions for test automation, and enhancing existing processes to improve Linux user experience.
Key responsibilities- Maintain and develop features for Python-based test automation tools like Checkbox, used internally and by industry partners.
- Innovate methods for remote, automated testing.
- Develop software for in-house testing hardware related to device features such as graphics, hotplug, and Bluetooth.
- Write functional and performance tests to support hardware enablement and regression prevention.
- Participate in international meetings, with occasional travel 2-3 times per year.
- Proficiency in Python programming.
- A pragmatic, quality-focused approach to software development.
- Interest in test automation methodologies.
- Experience with Ubuntu or other Linux distributions.
- Ability to work effectively within a globally distributed team.
- Passion for tinkering and making.
- Experience in agile development environments.
- Hardware testing experience, such as in IoT.
- Familiarity with C programming language.

**The successful Field Software Engineer will have**:
- BA/BS degree in Computer Science or related technical field
- 3 years of Linux development experience
- 3-5 years of professional experience with either OpenStack, Kubernetes, Ceph and/or Ubuntu
- Must be able to speak English fluently
- Strong background contributing code in Python and/or Go to open source projects in the cloud or devices area
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- High motivation, ability to multi-task and follow-up reliably on commitments
- Interest in customer-facing engagement, including pitching, demonstrating and understanding customer environment and needs
- Experience with or willingness to learn new technologies, including LXD, Snaps, MAAS, Juju and Ubuntu
- Ability to travel globally for periods up to two weeks; up to 50% of travel time (pending on covid-19 restrictions)
