Canonical is hiring a Python Software Engineer to join the Certification team, which develops tools to verify hardware compatibility with Ubuntu across desktops, laptops, servers, and IoT devices. The team works at the intersection of hardware and software, making familiarity with hardware essential for the candidate.
The Certification team creates tools for certifying hardware with Ubuntu Core, Ubuntu Desktop, and Server: . We design hardware probes and frameworks for software testing that ensure Ubuntu runs correctly on various devices.
This role offers an opportunity to impact Linux adoption across multiple device categories and industries. Canonical provides a dynamic, learning-rich environment, with the team primarily based in EMEA time zones, collaborating with colleagues in the Americas and APAC.
We work closely with silicon manufacturers, OEMs, ODMs, and internal teams to ensure a seamless, secure Ubuntu experience out of the box, expanding Ubuntu's presence on diverse devices.
Role descriptionWe seek a self-motivated Python developer to work on test automation tools and Linux-based embedded hardware. The role involves developing and maintaining Canonical's open-source certification tools, creating hardware solutions for test automation, and enhancing existing processes to improve Linux user experience.
Key responsibilities- Maintain and develop features for Python-based test automation tools like Checkbox, used internally and by industry partners.
- Innovate methods for remote, automated testing.
- Develop software for in-house testing hardware related to device features such as graphics, hotplug, and Bluetooth.
- Write functional and performance tests to support hardware enablement and regression prevention.
- Participate in international meetings, with occasional travel 2-3 times per year.
- Proficiency in Python programming.
- A pragmatic, quality-focused approach to software development.
- Interest in test automation methodologies.
- Experience with Ubuntu or other Linux distributions.
- Ability to work effectively within a globally distributed team.
- Passion for tinkering and making.
- Experience in agile development environments.
- Hardware testing experience, such as in IoT.
- Familiarity with C programming language.

We are hiring an Engineering Manager to lead one of our teams that work closely with Amazon, Microsoft, Google and other world-class cloud partners to optimize Ubuntu for their infrastructure. Our team builds, tests, and publishes the base Ubuntu images used by millions to ensure optimal performance and security in their cloud estate. We aim to deliver the very best public cloud VM experience, as well as specialized images for specific purposes on each cloud. Our goal is to celebrate and enable their particular points of differentiation on their clouds, while also ensure a common operating experience for their users.
As an engineering manager you need to bring both technical and management skills to the leadership of your team. You will also need to represent the team in direct partner engagement. You'll be responsible for the stability and functionality that our cloud users have come to expect. You will strive to automate the delivery of existing and new Ubuntu image products applied to all modern workloads from web servers to GPU-aided AI for servers, VM's and containers.
As an engineering manager at Canonical your primary responsibility is to the people you support: ensuring that they are growing as engineers, doing valuable work, and generally having a great time at Canonical. As a lead for strong engineers, technical leadership and a solid background in software development is a must, so that you're able to challenge and grow your team members. You will have the opportunity to influence the culture, facilitate technical delivery, and work with your team on strategy and execution.
We work in Python and Golang, and expect engineering managers to be fluent in the language, architecture and components that their team is building with. Code reviews and architectural leadership are part of the job. As manager, the commitment to healthy engineering practices, documentation, quality and performance optimisation are equally important technical responsibilities, as is the requirement for fair and clear management, and the obligation to ensure a high performing team.

- You have experience and commitment to agile development methodologies
- You have a Bachelor's or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM or similar degree
- Software development experience in Python or Golang
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Practical experience with at least one of Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, or AWS
