**Basic Function**:
The Speech-Language Pathologist is a professional who provides a range of speech-language pathology services, for patients with various speech, language "swallowing" and communication disorders.
**Scope**:
Working within Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare Nursing & Clinical Services Department in Dhahran, Al Hasa, Udhailiyah, Ras Tanura, and Abqaiq.
- Following a valid referral from any JHAH professional, the Speech-Language Pathologist is responsible for screening the patient and identifying the most appropriate plan of care. The Speech-Language Pathologist conducts comprehensive assessments for patients with various disorders, such as (but not limited to): Language and Articulation disorders, Apraxia, Dysarthria, Stuttering, Voice disorders, Dysphagia and Feeding disorders and other cognitive-linguistic disorders. The Speech-Language Pathologist provides assessment and management services to both pediatric and adult patients with various diagnosis such as, (but not limited to): Developmental language delays, Autism, Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Selective mutism, Social-communication disorders, Hearing impairment, Aphasia, and other Neuro-behavioral medical conditions.
- The Speech-Language Pathologist provides interventions that may include one-on-one weekly therapy sessions, group therapy sessions, parent coaching, and conducting parent workshops. The Speech-Language Pathologist is responsible for recording, and evaluating the patients’ responses and progress throughout therapy, with planned periodic re-evaluations to update the patient’s goals.
- The Speech-Language Pathologist collaborates with schedulers and other clerical staff in the clinic in managing all administrative patient care related duties. Seeks continued developmental improvement from other SLPs in the clinic and reports to the SLP- Team Lead or Supervisor of Rehabilitation Services.
- Achieves core competency skills in a minimum of two SLP areas (E.g. fluency, voice, articulation etc.)
- Conducts oneself ethically within the scope of practice and responsibilities for an Speech-Language Pathologist. Work hours are assigned to meet operational needs. Hours may include on call and scheduled overtime.
- Direction is through the service team leader and Rehabilitation Unit Supervisor.
**Principal Contacts**:
- Ongoing with patients and their families home caregivers for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the speech-language pathology plan of care; with new hire and newly assigned staff for orientation and integration into the unit; routinely with Physicians/Surgeons, nurses and other medical staff members to report changes in the patient's condition and/or needs, and coordinate the speech language pathology/rehabilitation program.
- Occasional public and community contact through communicating policy changes, revisions, and/or introduction of new work rules.
- Occasional with other JHAH personnel and outside services.
**Principal Duties**:
**1) ASSESSMENT**:
- Performs a comprehensive assessment for the referred/identified disorder in addition to conducting a detailed oral-motor skills assessment and a complete review of the patient’s medical history.
- Establishes functional goals, and designs a treatment plan in line with patient and family centered care.
**2) IMPLEMENTATION/INTERVENTIONS**:
- Provides Intervention services that will depend on the patient’s diagnosis and special needs ensuring optimal care delivery.
- Provides individual and group based therapy sessions to facilitate the patient’s functional communication skills.
- Communicates effectively with patient, family, caregivers, colleagues and members of the multidisciplinary team to promote maximum benefit of care and rehabilitation.
- Provides evaluation / progress reports for medical charts and/ or in response to medical liaison requests and /or Medical Referral Committee, reviewed and approved by the SLP- Team lead/Supervisor.
- Creates a functional home-program for the patient to practice at home, incorporating demonstration sessions to ensure parent coaching for implementation of the home program.
**3) EVALUATION**:
- Assesses the effectiveness of treatment, re-evaluates the patient periodically and modifies treatment approaches to achieve goals.
- Assesses educational needs of the patient, family, or caregiver and provides education and educational material to meet those needs, documenting intervention in the Patient Teaching Record (PTR)
- Refers patients to appropriate services based on the evaluation of patient’s needs.
- Plans for patient discharge.
**4) PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS**:
- Assist with clerical duties, such as preparing materials and scheduling activities as directed by the SLP Team leader.

Maintains complete records of the patients' original diagnosis, evaluation and treatment plan; records and evaluates patients' response and discusses progress with the Physician/Surgeon; recommends changes; advises when the patient is ready for discharge from the therapy room.
Demonstrates proper treatment procedures to ward personnel; instructs patients and families in procedures to be continued at home. As requested, plans and conducts lectures and training programs for medical staff, students and community groups; plans and participates in the speech and Hearing therapy research programs.
Keeps abreast of new techniques or equipments and recommends or implements them as applicable.
Complies with hospital dress code.
Performs other applicable tasks and duties assigned within the realm of the employee's knowledge, skills and abilities.
Patient and Family Education
Involves the patient/families in plan of care and respects patients/families regarding their goals and choices of patient care.
Provides health promotion and health teaching thru methods appropriate to a patients’ developmental level, learning needs, readiness and ability to learn, language preference, culture and situations.
Allots time necessary to assess, plan implement and evaluate patient education provided to patients/families with appropriate documentation.
Utilize the nursing process in creating and coordinating teaching plans for individualized patients.
Create patient care assignments as per competency regarding surgical procedures.
Education:
BS degree in Speech and language Therapy from an accredited institution, plus the required clinical internship for professional registration.
Holder of Professional license to practice.
Passed Saudi Council Registration exam.
Current CPR certification.
Experience :
The speech language and swallowing specialist with experience of at least 2 years for Inpatient and outpatient Rehabilitation program.
Skills:
Fluency in verbal and written English. Preferable also in Arabic
Knowledgeable of computer skills.
Ability to exhibits professionalism and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Must be willing and able to work with multi-cultural and physical handicapped.
Good in customer care and team work.

- Assess, diagnose, treat, and help to prevent disorders related to speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, swallowing, and fluency.
- Assess patient’s communication skills (e.g. articulation, fluency, voice, expressive and receptive language, etc.) for the purpose of identifying communication disorders, determining program eligibility and developing recommendations for treatment.
- Diagnose and treat language disorders, speech deficits and voice therapy exercise rehabilitation.
- Perform rigid and flexible laryngeal endoscopic examinations, diagnosing laryngeal disease and treating them.
- Perform pre and post palatal surgery assessments of velopharyngeal competence by endoscopy and participating in the multidisciplinary team determining optimal intervention.
- Manage Microlaryngeosurgery (for vocal fold polyps, nodules, Cysts), swallowing disorders, rehabilitating learning disability patients.
- Collaborate with a variety of groups and/or individuals (e.g. parents, physicians, administration, team members, other professionals, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, resolving issues and providing services in compliance with established guidelines.
- Coordinate meetings and processes for patients (e.g. testing/screening etc.) for the purpose of presenting evaluation results, developing treatment plans, and/or providing training to patients/ staff.
- Develop treatment plans, interventions and/or educational materials for the purpose of minimizing the adverse impact of communication disorders in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Instruct assigned support staff for the purpose of providing information on communicative disorders, use of assistive devices and feeding techniques and/or implementing prescribed treatment plans.
- Instruct eligible patients in the use of appropriate communication technologies (e.g. hearing aids, FM systems, augmentative communication devices, etc.) for the purpose of minimizing the adverse educational impact of communication disorders in accordance with established guidelines and legal requirements.
- Interpret medical reports within the scope and provide information and/or ensuring that treatment/intervention plans are appropriate.
- Ensure patients records (e.g. progress reports, activity logs, billing information, treatment plans, required documentation, quarterly reports, screening results, etc.) for the purpose of availability of information as required for reference and/or compliance.
- Provide speech and language therapy education to patients for the purpose of minimizing the adverse impact of speech and language disorders on their life.
- Participate in person-centered care initiatives undertaken by HMG.
- Enrich patient experience with compassion, respect and dignity.
- Perform other applicable task and duties assigned within the realm of his/her knowledge, skills and abilities.
