Job Purpose:
The Vessel Captain is responsible for the overall command, safe operation, and navigation of the vessel. This includes ensuring compliance with international maritime laws and regulations, maintaining crew discipline and performance, upholding safety, and environmental standards, and always representing the company’s interests. The captain ensures that all shipboard activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company policies and procedures.
Job Responsibilities:
- Full command and responsibility for the passengers, vessel, crew, cargo, and operations.
- Navigate the vessel safely and efficiently in accordance with COLREGS, voyage plans, and weather conditions.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable maritime laws, international conventions (IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW), and flag state requirements.
- Oversee all aspects of onboard safety, including conducting safety drills, inspections, and ensuring the readiness of lifesaving and firefighting equipment.
- Manage and supervise deck officers and crew, ensuring discipline, teamwork, and professional performance.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date logs, records, and reports as required by company policies and regulatory bodies.
- Liaise with shore-based management, port authorities, pilots, agents, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth operations.
- Report any incidents, accidents, or near misses promptly and participate in investigations.
- Ensure proper handling, loading, stowage, and discharge of cargo in line with stability and safety requirements.
- Monitor vessel condition and coordinate with the Chief Engineer regarding maintenance, repairs, and dry-dock preparations.
- Promote a strong safety culture onboard and ensure compliance with the ship's Safety Management System (SMS).
- Contribute to crew training and development across the fleet.
- Serve as a Senior Captain , providing support and leadership across all vessels in the fleet as needed.
Qualifications:
- Valid Certificate of Competency (COC) as Master (Class 1) for vessels of appropriate tonnage and trade area.
- STCW-compliant certification including Bridge Resource Management, GMDSS, and Passengers certificates.
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in overall roles, with at least 2 years as Master.
- Strong knowledge of maritime regulations, shipboard operations, and emergency procedures.
- Proficient in ECDIS, RADAR, ARPA, and other navigation systems.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Good command of English, both written and spoken.
