OverviewWe are looking for an Advanced Process Control (APC) Engineer to join our team at Global Manufacturing Excellence (GME) under the Reliability Solutions Department (RSD).
Your primary role will be to provide expert guidance and support to optimize operations using Advanced Process Control technologies such as DMC3, PACE or Profit Suite. You will also lead improvement initiatives for all operating departments within the Global Manufacturing Portfolio.
Key ResponsibilitiesAs a successful candidate you will be required to perform the following:
- Streamline APC objectives with corporate objectives and develop programs, best practices, and monitor KPIs to improve APC and economic performance.
- Analyze data from various sources, such as process variables, instrumentation, and control systems, to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Develop inferential (linear and non-linear) to improve refinery operations, efficiency and reduce costs.
- Implement APC strategies, perform feasibility studies and establish new business cases to optimize refinery operations and maximize the yield of desired products.
- Conduct pilots and evaluate new APC technologies such as Real-Time optimization, Machine Learning, and AI to contribute to yield improvement.
- Analyze chronicle problems and debottleneck complex APC to improve process operations and economic benefits.
- Provide subject matter expertise to operating facilities Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering teams by consulting, providing awareness sessions, and participating and leading technical exchanges and conferences.
- Lead technical sessions such as the design review, model review, and commissioning.
- Perform periodic assessments and evaluations to assess the performance and effectiveness of real-time optimization solutions.
- Work closely with the optimization team (Real Time optimization engineers, Simulation engineers and automation engineers) and ensure optimization requirements are met.
- Lead pre-and post-performance baseline evaluation for APC technologies.
- Monitor economic benefit Key performance indicators and provide recommendations.
- Review standards and General Instructions on behalf of the GME departments and act as leading SME.
As a successful candidate you will hold a:
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering or a related engineering degree. An advanced degree is preferred.
- 15 years of experience in reliability engineering in the Oil and Gas Industry’s downstream sector. Twenty years is preferable.
- Expertise in APC, control systems, and Open Platform Communication OPC.
- Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of refinery economics, mass and energy balances.
- Demonstrate familiarity with international standards and specifications for advanced process control.
- Exceptional analytical and troubleshooting skills in the field of advanced process control.
- Strong leadership skills to effectively manage technical discussions and guide technical teams.
- Knowledge of oil/gas-related plant processes.

Provide support to the refinery Process Control needs with the accurate and quick real-time engineering solutions. Respond to any operational abnormalities and provide required engineering support in
compliance with Yasref strategies and operational priorities. Ensure IRIS (Integrated Refinery Information System) integrity, accuracy and reliability in order to allow end users and management to monitor real-time data critical information of the plants' operations and facilitate and support decision making.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Ensure the safe, reliable and efficient process control operations throughout life cycle of processing. Perform day-to-day work in order to increase refinery excellence, plant reliability/integrity, and promote
health, safety & compliance and environmental standards.
2. Perform frequent plant visits to discuss the Process Control Systems and its applications and identify relevant operational issues with respective OME teams. Provide technical inputs to operation and maintenance teams to overcome control system issues.
3. Review the existing control sequence, advanced process control, expert system applications and generate/approve efficient and cost-effective sound recommendations/actions. Highlight wrong operation practice (manual operation, bypass implementation,) and deliver safe viable idea to avoid human mistake.
4. Ensure process control and PAS Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) and Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) are cleared to ensure the system and design meet YASREF requirements.
5. Participate in investigation on equipment failures, system failures and identify the root causes and provide sound recommendations to prevent future failure or incidents.
6. Perform economic analysis, justifications and optimization for process automation systems (for projects) and modifications. Lead the studies to improve the control scheme and applications if needed and provide recommendations. Approve and support online and virtual analysers' hardware and software.
7. Apply Model Predictive Control (MPC) and Advanced Control Applications (ACAP) for enhanced plant optimization. Incorporate all major applications, architecture and integration components and ensure alignment with YASREF's ultimate business objectives. Develop and execute the MES (Manufacturing Execution Strategy) / IRIS development in alignment with OME and organizational goals and industry advancement.
8. Develop new control scheme designs, develop required calculations, and prepare software packages. In association with IT, select a Service Integrator, who is able to combine industry knowledge with technical and integration skills and capable of teaming up with specific software vendors.
9. Lead troubleshooting, investigation, and root cause analyses of control systems application problems.
10. Oversee integration of systems with ERP, PLM (Product Life cycle management) and other related systems are well integrated and ensure seamless data flow and real-time insights. Define a clear set of key performance indicators (KPI) as well as standardized reporting structures, data models and integration guidelines.
11. Collect all needed data for IRIS development. Provide Database Management System (DBMS) and inhouse developed information systems to form a bridge between the Integrated Refinery Information System (IRIS) and the Distributed Control System (DCS).
12. Unite business controls, production controls and process controls integrate in real time to create actual workflow and flow of information. Develop a robust, scalable and easy-to-maintain system in alliance with IT, that supports real-time decision making and perform various analysis.
13. Incorporate all major applications, architecture and integration components and ensure alignment with YASREF's ultimate business objectives. Improve operational performance as per industry benchmarks.
14. Participate in digital transformation initiatives leveraging MES capabilities, analytics and automation technologies. Drive continuous improvement efforts by identifying areas for optimization and implement innovative solutions.
15. Provide Database Management System (DBMS) and in-house developed information systems to form a bridge between the Integrated Refinery Information System (IRIS) and the Distributed Control System (DCS).
