The General Manager will serve as the strategic and operational leader of a vertically integrated, innovation-led specialty chemical company with a global client base and a mission-critical role in its clients' value chains. This individual will be directly responsible for stewarding end-to-end operations across R&D, scale-up, manufacturing, regulatory affairs, commercial strategy, and organizational design.
Operating in a highly specialized, quality-intensive, and compliance-driven environment, the GM will define and implement a high-performance operating model that balances scientific rigor, industrial reliability, commercial foresight, and financial discipline. The successful candidate will possess a unique hybrid of deep technical fluency, strategic acuity, and executive-level leadership—capable of interfacing with chemists, regulators, institutional buyers, and capital stakeholders with equal credibility.
Key Responsibilities Strategic & Commercial Leadership- Define, articulate, and continuously refine the company’s multi-year strategy to achieve market dominance in its niche sector.
- Drive category positioning, competitive differentiation, and global go-to-market strategy—including strategic partnerships, licensing, and JV opportunities.
- Lead inorganic growth initiatives (M&A, tech acquisitions, joint developments) with robust due diligence and post-integration planning.
- Navigate long-cycle sales processes, with a focus on value-based selling in technically sophisticated markets.
- Provide strategic direction to the R&D and technical teams in developing proprietary formulations, molecules, or processes aligned with market needs and IP defensibility.
- Oversee pilot plant to full-scale production transitions, ensuring process scalability, safety, and yield optimization.
- Champion investment in advanced technologies (e.g., continuous manufacturing, catalysis, green chemistry, digitized QC/QA systems).
- Architect and enforce world-class operational standards across production, quality, maintenance, and logistics, with continuous improvement frameworks such as Six Sigma or TPM.
- Set rigorous KPIs across EHS, OEE, energy consumption, and inventory turnover.
- Oversee complex manufacturing assets with multiple product changeovers, batch production, and stringent impurity/safety profiles.
- Ensure absolute adherence to global regulatory standards (e.g., REACH, FDA, GMP, ISO, GHS, EPA, CLP) across all operations and product categories.
- Direct regulatory submissions, audits, and responses, including pre-market registration, dossier compilation, and compliance assurance.
- Institute enterprise-wide quality systems, audit trails, document controls, and deviation management protocols.
- Own the full P&L with accountability for EBITDA growth, working capital efficiency, and capital budgeting.
- Build and model financial scenarios for new market entry, facility expansion, or major R&D investments.
- Work closely with owners, private equity, or family stakeholders to report performance, manage risk, and ensure value creation.
- Lead and scale a multidisciplinary organization spanning chemists, process engineers, regulatory experts, commercial managers, and operations leaders.
- Drive cultural alignment across innovation, compliance, performance, and continuous learning.
- Establish succession planning, leadership development, and global hiring frameworks to support expansion.
- Advanced degree in Chemical Engineering, Organic Chemistry, Materials Science, or related; MBA or executive business education highly desirable.
- 12–20 years of progressive leadership experience in the specialty chemicals, fine chemicals, or life sciences ingredients sector, with at least 5 years in P&L or enterprise leadership.
- Deep working knowledge of chemical production processes, from lab to industrial scale (e.g., distillation, hydrogenation, microreactor, enzymatic catalysis, etc.).
- Familiarity with regulatory frameworks across multiple jurisdictions (EU, US, Asia).
