Overview

We are looking for an Advanced Process Control (APC) Engineer to join our team at Global Manufacturing Excellence (GME) under the Reliability Solutions Department (RSD).

Your primary role will be to provide expert guidance and support to optimize operations using Advanced Process Control technologies such as DMC3, PACE or Profit Suite. You will also lead improvement initiatives for all operating departments within the Global Manufacturing Portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

As a successful candidate you will be required to perform the following:

  • Streamline APC objectives with corporate objectives and develop programs, best practices, and monitor KPIs to improve APC and economic performance.
  • Analyze data from various sources, such as process variables, instrumentation, and control systems, to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop inferential (linear and non-linear) to improve refinery operations, efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Implement APC strategies, perform feasibility studies and establish new business cases to optimize refinery operations and maximize the yield of desired products.
  • Conduct pilots and evaluate new APC technologies such as Real-Time optimization, Machine Learning, and AI to contribute to yield improvement.
  • Analyze chronicle problems and debottleneck complex APC to improve process operations and economic benefits.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to operating facilities Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering teams by consulting, providing awareness sessions, and participating and leading technical exchanges and conferences.
  • Lead technical sessions such as the design review, model review, and commissioning.
  • Perform periodic assessments and evaluations to assess the performance and effectiveness of real-time optimization solutions.
  • Work closely with the optimization team (Real Time optimization engineers, Simulation engineers and automation engineers) and ensure optimization requirements are met.
  • Lead pre-and post-performance baseline evaluation for APC technologies.
  • Monitor economic benefit Key performance indicators and provide recommendations.
  • Review standards and General Instructions on behalf of the GME departments and act as leading SME.
Minimum Requirements

As a successful candidate you will hold a:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering or a related engineering degree. An advanced degree is preferred.
  • 15 years of experience in reliability engineering in the Oil and Gas Industry’s downstream sector. Twenty years is preferable.
  • Expertise in APC, control systems, and Open Platform Communication OPC.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of refinery economics, mass and energy balances.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with international standards and specifications for advanced process control.
  • Exceptional analytical and troubleshooting skills in the field of advanced process control.
  • Strong leadership skills to effectively manage technical discussions and guide technical teams.
  • Knowledge of oil/gas-related plant processes.

  • Efficiently manages and maintains meticulous project documentation, including design records, change orders, and necessary approvals.
  • Initiate and chair meetings with the client, consultants, design team and stakeholders whilst capturing minutes of meetings as necessary.
  • Manages all matters related to design being ‘fit for purpose’ specifically ‘Safety in Design’.
  • Leads the design sign off process by all design consultants / sub-contract designers.
  • Ensures quality assurance processes are in place to review design deliverables and ensure compliance with project specifications, design standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures the team designs according to the cost/business plan, system and operations plan.
  • Assists Cost Consultants assess the cost of design changes and track accordingly ensuring proper change management processes are adhered to throughout the design process.
  • Oversees production of Work Breakdown Structure for design/engineering deliverables which is suitable for production of design documentation and is in accordance with procurement, construction staging and project phasing requirements.
  • Oversees the governance of Shared and Published information within districts and sub districts
  • Facilitates the coordination of interfaces between projects within districts and sub districts Infrastructure.
  • Assists with the evaluation of RFP proposals and provides necessary support to the various business teams
  • Assists, prepares and presents both progress reports and stage gate presentations for each project, highlighting key milestones, challenges, programmes, designs, costs / budgets and achievements.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation, Control Systems, or Electrical Engineering, with a minimum of 15 years of work experience in the design, installation, and commissioning of instrumentation and control systems for industrial and infrastructure projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of process control systems, including SCADA, DCS, PLC systems, and automation technologies, with a focus on process optimization, safety, and performance.
  • Experience in the design, selection, and specification of instrumentation, including flow meters, pressure sensors, temperature transmitters, level sensors, and control valves, for infrastructure projects.
  • Proficiency in control system design with experience in PLC programming (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, etc.), HMI design, and system integration for large-scale industrial operations.
  • Expertise in network architecture for control systems, with an understanding of cybersecurity protocols for industrial control systems (ICS) and IT/OT convergence.
  • Knowledge of KSA authority regulations and experience working with local regulatory bodies to obtain approval for instrumentation and control systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to manage complex systems and ensure the reliability and safety of instrumentation and control operations.

We invite applications for a faculty position in chemical engineering with a focus on process modeling, control, and optimization, as well as data-driven methods for sustainable energy and advanced manufacturing.

The candidate should have expertise in dynamic process modeling, control theory, and optimization of chemical and energy systems.

The candidate should have expertise in simulation, prediction, and optimization of large-scale, multiscale, or networked chemical processes. Special emphasis will be directed toward incorporating advanced algorithms, high-performance computing, uncertainty quantification, digital twins, and machine learning into process systems of industrial and societal relevance.

About the PSE Division and KAUST

The Physical Science and Engineering Division comprises seven Degree Programs: Material Science and Engineering, Applied Physics, Earth Science and Engineering, Energy Resources and Petroleum Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. These disciplines provide the foundation for our Division's quest to address some of the major challenges that we face in the world today, including those related to energy and the environment. Specifically, our faculty members and their research teams work on topics as diverse as: renewable energy, photovoltaics, porous materials for carbon capture and membranes, clean combustion, atmospheric modeling, new polymers and composite for smart materials and structures, catalysis and catalytic processes.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or a closely related discipline is required. Proven track record in managing a research group as well as publishing high-impact papers.

Teaching and service responsibilities

Commitment to high-quality teaching at the graduate level, including two courses per academic year. Active service to KAUST on all aspects of academic life.

Research Responsibilities

The University offers access to multiple sources of research funding to its Principal Investigators. The successful applicant should have an established record of publishing high-impact papers, and is expected to create a thriving research program including engaging in national and international scientific collaborations.
